Notes: Inscribed DUKE STONE, DS 1853 and FHS, on Ilsington/Manaton parish bounds. Dave Brewer takes on the story: “As stated in No.15 it was agreed to set up this stone in 1853 ‘to the Memory of the present Lord-of-the Manor, the Most Noble Edward Adolphus the Duke of Somerset K.G.’ This is now missing, believed washed away in the 1938 floods, but was sited on the right bank of the brook directly opposite the old gateway… A thorough search downstream from the point where it once stood has failed to reveal its resting place.

On the death of F.H. (Harry) Starkey in 1989 money was raised for some sort of memorial. On the Dartmoor Preservation Association asking the author for suggestions, and as Harry lived in Ilsington, it seemed a good idea to have a new Duke Stone erected.

The numbering for these Haytor and Bagtor Down boundary markers is the same as that used by Dave Brewer.
