Eric Hemery, in ‘High Dartmoor’ (1983), describes the area on p576; “On the south shoulder of the hill is a feature, historically and topographically interesting, to the existence of which not even the contours of the OS 1:25,000 map provide a hint. Taking the form of a huge natural trough or pit, declining diagonally eastwards towards the gorge, it is concealed from the walker on Vag Hill by a precipitous drop to the pit, the sides of which bristle with rock, shrubs and trees.”
