William Donaghy Memorial Stone. Higher up than I realised, I had to crash through a bit of prickly gorse to get here! I had tried to find this memorial a number of times with only a vague idea of where in the valley, below Hartland Tor it might be. I always seemed to be in this area without my GPS! Finally found it today – hurrah!
The inscription reads:
“IN MEMORY OF / WILLIAM DONAGHY / OF LIVERPOOL / WHO DIED BESIDE THIS STONE / FEBRUARY 1914”
Very mysterious story associated with this memorial – see the excellent Legendary Dartmoor for the full details!
