Notes: Clapper Bridges are a special classification of Foot Bridge on Dartmoor and some are quite ancient. Some Clappers were built to take a horse or even a horse and cart and are thus classified as 'Wide' on Dartefacts. Sometimes piers were placed midstream to support more than one impost (slab of rock) to cross a longer stream gap. The only Clapper Bridge on Dartmoor that had three piers (or was it four?!) was at Dartmeet, although it is unfortunately now a ruin.
