The Firing Ranges

Dartefacts is indebted to John Deakins, Dartmoor Guide Paul Rendell and (retired) Lt. Col. Tony Clark OBE for providing an immense amount of knowledge and data for this classification. John's book, Dartmoor Observation Posts, is an invaluable resource that supplies information about the often neglected military structures on the North Moor, many of which have fallen into disuse. The author provides many grid references and all-important photographs. I might use the text below for a hut, stable, op and splinterproof classification.. This classification includes all Firing Range Huts, Observation Posts (OPs) and Splinterproof Huts (SPs); these all being important places of refuge for the military, but also as a location to base operations and look out across the remote moor. These items are heavily concentrated on the North Moor, around the three military live firing ranges of Okehampton, Merrivale and Willsworthy, but a few OPs are located on the South Moor, forming the Butterdon Rifle Range. This classification aims to document all of those known on Dartmoor, and this endeavour has been greatly facilitated by John Deakins' book 'Dartmoor Observation Posts', with help from Dartmoor Guide Paul Rendell and (retired) Lt. Col. Tony Clark OBE.
