SideBySide

I have searched and searched and searched for this elusive one. Seems odd to have it SE facing on a slope with a NW aspect. Quite a few rocks but most covered with thick vegetation and/or under heavy grass. Very few of the rocks have a SE facing.

I have done some map work..

The B.M. is clearly not on a direct line between the two adjacent

B.M.s. I wonder whether using angles between observable features might narrow down its location – for example wall junctions, the aquaduct, the vague ‘island’ (that no longer seems to exist – at least not as clearly on the old map).

Max Piper (06/01/23): Still can’t find it. I’m not giving up!

Rob Naylor: Monday 13th March 2023. Ok, I now give up. I have looked and looked and looked for this one for years and it has now beaten me. It is irritatingly close to the road and also close to few places I like to often visit and so it has not been unusual for me over the years to make a quick detour through the area where this B.M. is supposed to be located to spend a few minutes (ahem!) searching for it. Today I went out from near to Black Tor and followed the entire line from the stone row B.M. (1128.6), towards Cramber Tor and beyond the Trig to the elusive ‘gully’ B.M. (1404.0). Today I had a plan and used survey flags (as seen in the featured image) and planted them at the 1913 and 1914 sidebyside map NGR locations. I also used the adjustments from the nearest B.M.s west (1128.6) and east (1168.8) both of which I have already found. This gave me 8 further flag locations (you can see them disappearing off in the featured image). However, despite considerable effort over a 2 hour period with this new plan, I still failed to find the B.M. and don’t think after that I shall return again! My personal theory is that the stones on the slope may have been taken to build the sluice down the hill. There is a large grass covered spoil heap near the stream below and the B.M. I am searching for may be either in that heap or now in a wall helping to divert water!
