RJN: After visiting this location to search for this B.M. a number of times I decided to give it one last ‘all in’ attempt. Starting from the original (SidebySide) NGR at SX 63391 86479 (adjusted north to the wall) I searched 20m both uphill and downhill, on my knees. Despite pulling back all grass and searching meticulously on all the faces of all wall stones I again found absolutely nothing. This is odd as the wall ground level stones appear to be very solidly placed and unlikely to have fallen. The other B.M.s in the line are generally well cut, especially the two corner B.M.s of this wall and with the exception of the East facing B.M. just below which is quite poorly cut and positioned, I felt this B.M. could easily have been placed on some nice, flat, facing stone. But I couldn’t find it. However, about to give up just uphillI (about 11m from the adjusted NGR, according to Garmin Basecamp software) I found what appears to be a very badly damaged B.M. The lower dart edges appear to be present (debatable) although the upper section has been either weathered or entirely smashed off. This part of the wall has collapsed so either is possible. This is a very debatable B.M. but given the lack of a found B.M. within a 40m stretch of the original NGR it is likely that the B.M., if found, would have to be in a very poor condition. It is odd, but not unknown, that the surveyors chose such a poor quality rock to cut their B.M. as it does appear to have a number of fault lines and the face doesn’t look as suitable for longevity as some of the better quality face granite stones nearby. However, as already stated, this is not unknown and given its proximity and the vague presence of three possible darts, I’m going with this as B.M. 1539.2.
