If you’ve climbed up to the summit of Cosdon Beacon from Belstone, Sticklepath or South Zeal, you will need some sugar! This is a hill of biblical, rounded proportions that graces the northern perimeter of Dartmoor. Its supreme elevation somewhat detached from other lofty high points led to it for many years being considered as Dartmoor’s highest point, with Rippon Tor following in second. However, the truth is that, despite its superior position, Cosdon is some 71m below High Willhays, the actual highest point, and still a fair way below many other peaks; namely: Hangingstone and Cut Hills, 603m; Whitehorse Hill, 602m; Great Links Tor, 586m; Kitty Tor, 584m; and even Summer Hill, 563m.
