Numerous letterboxes emanate from this solitary rain gauge – the highest on Dartmoor – atop the imposing dome of Cut Hill. Tim Jenkinson (2003) mentions it: “Across the summit brow of Cut Hill, spot height 603 metres, there are a few interesting features to seek out. Firstly there is a low flat stone inscribed with the initials JEW. There is much speculation concerning the meaning and purpose of the letters and the stone has become a popular point of focus for the Dartmoor Letterboxing hobby. Nearby a small cairn has been constructed and through the avenues of peat banks a rain gauge can be found.” A photo of the gauge is supplied in the article.
