Tavy Head is one of Dartmoor’s most dramatic (and obvious) river heads. Here, in the middle of the northern fen, just below Cut Hill, a trickle of water makes its way into a large peat bank that is defined by brown walls above tussocks. The ground is very unstable and difficult going, boggy in places and extremely remote. You wouldn’t want to find yourself here during mist, a thunderstorm or heavy rain.
The Tavy is reputed to be the second-fastest river in the British Isles, and here, in the deep moor, issues a river bound for the beautiful spots of Tavy Hole, Tavy Cleave and Double Waters that all lie below.
