Inscribed into this stone:

“BY PERMISSION OF / HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES / WENTWORTH BULLER / ON SEPT 16th 1868 CUT DOWN A TREE NEAR THIS SPOT / IT MEASURED (9 IN) IN DIAMETER / AND APPEARED TO BE ABOUT / 163 YEARS OLD“.

Also known as ‘The Druid’s Stone’, the date of 1868 had for many years been incorrectly cited as 1866, including by both William Crossing and Eric Hemery. Mike Brown in his Guide to Dartmoor CD Rom is the first to provide the correct year.
