Notes: Paul Rendell (1996) writes that the mine here “was worked as early as the reign of Elizabeth I, after whom it was reputedly named. Thereafter, exploitation was somewhat sporadic, and this was a pattern that was to continue after it was known to have reopened in 1816 as a copper mine.” Rendell notes that, after severe financial issues, the mine went into liquidation in 1873.
Helen Harris (1986), on the other hand, states that Virtuous Lady Mine was worked from 1588 until 1807, and then reopened in the 1830s before finally closing in 1879. As is the case with mines, information as to their exact dates can be scant.
