629 Capping Stone – Lynch Tor (Nr.)
Note: This is a very rough approximation of this item’s location.
Reference: Information kindly supplied by Steve Grigg on Facebook Dartmoor 365 Group. Thanks also to Louise Allerton for starting the conversation.
‘Steve Grigg: From memory, it’s about 100-200m SE(ish) from the tor near (or on side) of a shallow path/gully. It’s an easy find and not hidden. Good luck.’
Where is it?! We keep looking.
Limsboro’ Cairn
Turf House, near Lynch Tor (502 m)
Apparently, this is ‘Turf House’ (or what remains). The following quote from Crossing’s Guide is courtesy of Tim Sandles (Legendary Dartmoor).. “…here many years ago stood a building known as the Turf House. In this, the peat cut for use at Wheal Betsy used to be stored. The granite pillars that supported the roof are still to be seen.” Crossing’s Guide to Dartmoor, p.170.
There are two other long stones that have fallen over next to the upright. It looks like the ruins of a large rectangular building. Large rectangular areas that might have contained water (settling tanks?) appear vaguely in the landscape nearby. Possibly these rectangular areas are where the peat was cut from?
Note ground features that can be seen on Google Earth (PHB)

Notes: There is rumour of another 629 Capping stone located out near here.
