Ditsworthy Warren Inscribed Stone

Notes: A rectangular shaped stone with a rectangle relief cut into its face into which are inscribed words. Possibly starts with “Ditsworthy Warren..” but currently actual text is unknown. The corners of the rectangle relief are slightly rounded and this and the text look like very skilled workmanship.

Acknowledgements: Noted by Helga Palmer on the Dartmoor 365 Facebook Group; “..just by the river..”. Helga also kindly provided the initial 6 figure NGR. “..this is right by the river at the head of a kind of pool, looked almost like a small headstone”. Max Piper has updated the NGR taking into consideration the stone’s proximity to the Lee Moor Leat head weir.

Thanks also to Paul Glanville for supplying the photographs and the inscription text (as below). Paul describes: “The stone is on the bank opposite the leat take off, approx by the top left part of the E of Warren, on the map.

The inscription reads:

DITSWORTHY WARREN / SMOLT SCREEN / OPENED BY / MATTHEW ARTHUR / IMERYS MINERAL ESTATES AGENT / ON 19th MAY 2004 / Jointly funded by IMERYS / and the ENVIRONMENT AGENCY
