TO SHAKESPEARE Inscription below Beardown Bridge

Revd. Edward Bray Inscription. Also found here are TO SPENCER, TO BURNS, TO THOMSON and, across the river (on private land), TO MILTON.

Edward Bray acquired Beardown in c.1802 and, along with his wife, Anna Eliza Bray, believed in the Druids. Edward died in 1816. Their son, also an Edward, set out to inscribe a number of stones along the Cowsic River dedicated to poets with fanciful phrases. Many of these today reside on private land and cannot be visited without prior permission from the landowner, but those at Beardown Bridge are close to a public footpath.
