B.M. on Recumbent Slab, possibly B.M. 1088.0, at Lud Gate?

This benchmark has stumped both Max Piper and Rob Naylor as Side by Side maps mark B.M. 1088.0 to the south of Lud Gate, although it has never been located. Strangely, it has a south facing aspect which, if true and in situ, would mean it faces onto private land away from the track. However, in May 2022, Andrew Bull recorded a benchmark on a recumbent slab, possibly a gatepost, to the north-west of Lud Gate. Could this be the elusive benchmark in question? It is, after all, quite common for gateposts to be replaced and moved around. (MP)

Hayford Cross, Socket Stone?

Mentioned by Rev. H. Hugh Breton it would seem that this supposed cross socket stone could actually be a take-off point for the nearby leat near Hayford. No one seems to know for sure but Chris Bishop was told about the leat theory by Harry Starkey. Two possible purposes, both plausible, but with no evidence of a cross in the vicinity it is difficult to believe that this buried stone was the base of a cross. But who knows? Dartmoor likes to surprise us!

If it is a water regulator stone, why was it seemingly dumped here?
