Hedge Barton 1849 Mystery Inscription

Notes: Max Piper was shown this ‘mystery inscription’ on the wall by Tim Jenkinson. The initials below the date are hard to read, but a photo taken in decent light by Sheron Vowden suggests it says “1849 / F.D. Budd”.

Natsworthy Manor Stone inscribed DS 1854

Notes: In Dave Brewer’s book on P83 he lists another DS1854 inscribed rock between the Saddle Clove Stone and the New Take to the east.

In the image you can see the clove stone behind and above it. (Dave Hamnett)

Saddle Clove Rock/ The Clove Stone

This Rock is essentially a boundary marker for the Duke of Somerset’s estate and is inscribed ‘DS 1854’ on its north face. Beside it there is a strange boulder that looks as if the top of a newly hatched egg had been removed – if you get it? My third visit, in April 2021, showed a lot of moss obscuring the inscription, so not wanting to remove it all I bring you an older (by a couple of years) photo. (MP)

Hedge Tor

Notes: Sometimes known as Hedge Down Tor, this is a fine, rarely visited tor of two large outcrops on Hedge Down that was first documented in historic hunting records. Please see Tors of Dartmoor for further details.
