Spent quite a bit of time hunting around the various rocks and boulders in this area. A couple of very likely candidates but nothing could be discerned. We did note that on this side of the moor the granite is very friable and that a number of the B.M.s found in this area, when facing the west, have been eroded to the point of almost being totally lost. Also it is worth noting that the GPS locations from sidebyside for these B.M.s have been extremely inaccurate – the B.M.s south of this one have all been between 26-30 metres out. Featured image is of the sharp bend in the river nearby.

This item had been reported by Bernie Millington (Bench Mark Database, 2007) as located at SX 56658 78153 and in good condition.

“This Bench Mark is cut into a large Granite rock just above the River Walkham below Greena Ball and slightly East of Dead lake foot. It was cut by the OS survey team in the late 1800’s and is shown on first OS map of Devon dated 1890 with a spot height of 1413.9 feet above sea level. Found and created in database after researching 1890 OS map (Bernie Millington, 2007, BM Database).

I (RN) looked again today (Sun 28 Sept. 2025), but still couldn’t find it. I didn’t have my GPS so just wandered around the general area looking at rocks..
