Beautiful Tavistock is one of four ancient Stannary towns around Dartmoor, where tin was sold and traded. This therefore gave it immense importance. The town is the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, an English explorer and privateer who was best-known for circumnavigating the world in just a single expedition between 1577 and 1580. There is a statue dedicated to him at a roundabout in the town which was erected by the Duke of Bedford in 1883.
Tavi (as it is known) is also well-known for its canal which starts near Abbey Bridge and flows through the park behind the Meadowlands Leisure Centre. Built between 1803 and 1817 (Tavistock Canal – Poetry Trail Guide, 2021), the canal was built to enable the exportation of copper ore, a substance that the Tavistock and West Devon area was rich in. The canal runs from Tavistock to Morwellham Quay which is a port on the tidal River Tamar, but on its route passes over an aqueduct in the Lumburn valley and through a 1.5-mile tunnel.
