South Down North-East
Reference: Several low outcrops reside near a treeline at the north-east end of South Down, a non-granitic ridge on north-west Dartmoor. For further details, please see Tors of Dartmoor. The lowest peak of Black Tor can be seen in the above image, far left.
Meldon Tor
Reference: This steep hillside is littered with crags that are collectively called ‘Meldon Tor’ – thanks to Paul Rendell for that information. The low, exposed bedrock on the spur of the hill is the only accessible portion. Also documented on Tors of Dartmoor.
Dam (earthwork), Okehampton Wheal Maria
Notes: This mine is also known as the Devon Copper Mine.
Reference: Steve Grigg on his Dartmoor Explorations website has kindly supplied Dartefacts with the information and NGR for this item, where reference was made to mindat.org and Dr Phil Newman thesis; Tin and Copper Mining on Dartmoor c1700-1914. On the mindat.org website, it was stated by Hamilton Jenkin (1981) that the mine was started in 1863 and despite initial promise, the working was unsuccessful and the machinery and materials were put up for auction in 1866.
The Featured Image was kindly supplied by Steve Granger with an alternative NGR of SX 56934 91805, taken from across the brook.
