Dry Lake Aqueduct for Clay Pipes

Description: This aqueduct carries two china clay pipes (which in places are exposed in the concrete) which head to Cantrel, once transporting china clay from Red Lake. The little arch allows the water of the Dry Lake (which, as one would expect, is usually dry!) to pass under during times of heavy rainfall or runoff.

Harford/ Ugborough – BS No.58

Steve Grigg (2022) writes: “Shown on side-by-side (1873 map) as north of Leftlake (stream), albeit the stream appears to have been “moved” slightly north by the 20th century clay workings (select 1873 then 1949 and you’ll see what I mean). I conclude the BS might have been swallowed up by the 20th century workings. That said the rock shown and labelled as No 58 on Dartefacts might be the one as it looks in keeping with the series.

This was before the visit by Max Piper and Paul Rendell in November 2020. The industry here totally changed the landscape and it is difficult knowing what hasn’t been touched. (MP)
