B.M. 1303.9, SEF, Pointed Rock, Large Cut

I checked old maps to see if there were any extra benchmarks to be found between Pupers Hill and Lud Gate, and there was one. Having not plotted it, I had to rely on my satellite imagery (on ViewRanger) and its position on the old maps in relation to a group of trees. It took a while, but miraculously I actually found the benchmark – and what a superb example.

Notice the huge cut bit of rock at the top of the arrow. I’ve never seen this before; was it to take the height reading?

Buckfastleigh Moor

A stunning tract of moorland, featuring Pupers Hill, Snowdon and Ryder’s Hill, with awe-inspiring views both into the southern moor and the South Devon coast. It is enjoyable to approach from Lud Gate, with a steep climb up to Pupers Hill.
