DOOM inscribed on Smallacombe Rocks

Notes: This inscription could alternatively be interpreted as ‘HOOT’ or ‘DOCH’, but it is most likely ‘DOOM’! (MP, March 2026)

Acknowledgements:

  • The word ‘HOOT’ is inscribed onto one of these rocks. (Reference: Paul Rendell, pg 23, Dartmoor News 144, May/June 2015).
  • Site visit by Max Piper, Tim Jenkinson and Paul Buck of the Tors of Dartmoor website (March 2026).

Addition: David Beattie (pg 75, Dartmoor Magazine, Issue 134, Spring) mentions this item in the ‘Letters to Editor’ section – but reads the letters as DOCH (he is reading it the other way up to Paul Rendell). David kindly provided the 10 fig grid reference in his letter.
