Side by Side maps from the 19th and early 20th Century show ‘B.M. 799.0’ as facing north on the north side of the building; but on Dartmoor HER, a benchmark is instead shown as being on the east side and facing east. Max Piper reckons that the original benchmark had been rendered over and that a revisiting surveyor had cut a new one nearby, which is plausible when looking at the OS Benchmark Archive which tells us it was cut in 1964. The wall that the new benchmark is on certainly does not look 19th Century, and the possible wall that the original benchmark was on is painted cream.
