Definitions:

  • Burrows: A hole dug in the ground that an animal, such as a rabbit, lives in. An area of land called a 'Burrows' suggests many such holes. Legendary Dartmoor suggests that Burrows are "..any mound or heap and includes cairns, barrows, or spoil heaps".
  • Chases: A type of land reserved by the landowner for the purposes of hunting.
  • Commons: "This term applies to the areas of heather moors that encircle the Forest of Dartmoor and belong to the border parishes who have the rights of pasturage and turbary. Sometimes the common is referred to as a moor especially on the south of Dartmoor", (Legendary Dartmoor).
