Clapper Bridges, Foot, No Piers

Definition: A single impost span refers to a crossing point short enough for a single slab of rock to span a water-course gap without requiring one or more piers for support. This classification is for a single 'narrow' impost that would have been suited to on-foot crossings and unlikley to be used by a pack horse and definitely not by a horse and cart etc. Typically this crossing will be over a leat (a narrow water-course 'gully') on Dartmoor.
