In this general vicinity there are two rocks; one, to the east, that is almost smack bang on the grid reference I obtained from historic maps, and another, to the west, beside the bridleway. Both of these are made of quartz and are horrifically rough and not ideal for benchmarks. I inspected both carefully and noted two darts on the western rock. I am going to stick my neck out and call this a success, although you would never know from the photos – and I’m still a bit dubious! I guess weathering on quartz is quite rapid?

It is hard to say but the centre and right darts certainly (to me) look to have been cut into the rock.
