Penny Samuels:Leading up to the pool, the mechanism to raise the ‘plug’, the ‘plug’ and the outfall from the ‘plug’, which is still working perfectly.

The swimming pool, which is about 12 feet deep, was built by the American GIs stationed in Ivybridge during WW II. It was fed from the River Erme. If you want to see it you’d better be quick; it’s being filled in.’

You can read more about the swimming pool on the Ivybridge Heritage website. It used to be a reservoir serving Ivybridge with drinking water until it was deemed insufficient, the supply then moved to Butter Brook Reservoir.

Max Piper note: Provided I have the right place, I make the swimming pool at SX 63772 57303, not SX 63520 57570 as initially recorded which is near a boundstone (BS). The BS is inscribed ILB for Ivybridge Local Board.
