Steve writes: “Milestone at entrance to castle (gaol). Once a gatepost with a broken peg/hook in the face. It is recorded as dating from c1762. It is inscribed, ‘8 T 9 O’ (meaning 8 miles to Tavistock, 9 miles to Okehampton).“
