Crosses

The crosses of Dartmoor are well worth visiting not only because of their stature (in most cases!) but for the historical insights they provide, which extends from very old to very modern. Some crosses served more than one purpose, such as Bennett's Cross, which has been both a route marker and a boundary marker for Headland Warren. Then there are many that are memorials, such as Cave-Penney Cross. Some crosses are impressive and rise above the onlooker, whereas others are incised, recumbent or broken, such as Postbridge Cross. Socket stones are also included, even if there is no cross extant. Visiting the crosses of Dartmoor will take you across remote moorland, through narrow country lanes and into picturesque villages and towns. There are roughly 220 known crosses on Dartmoor. There are a few crosses on private land where it will be essential to obtain the permission of the landowner to visit. Addiscott Cross, Widgery Cross on Brat Tor, Hele Cross, Bovey Cross (or Hospit Cross), Sanduck Cross, Headlands Farm Cross, Pixies' Cross, Windy Post, Nun's Cross (or Siward's Cross), Horn's Cross, Boundary Crosses (or Petre's Cross) and Spurrell's Cross are the Dartmoor 365 items in the Crosses classifications, and Hawsons Cross is included with Stumpy Oak. On Dartefacts, for ease of searching, we have divided crosses into classifications. These individual classifications display the crosses that are relevant to each, but please note that there are some instances where a cross can fit into more than one category. We have endeavoured to choose the most suitable. The Dartefacts team have compiled the list of crosses on this site primarily from the following references:
