This is a massive tor, sometimes referred to as a volcano because of its projection from some angles. The name of ‘Hare’ is thought to derive from ‘Hayer’ meaning ‘Higher’, or in other words ‘Higher Tor’. William Crossing called it ‘Great Hay Tor’ and the cairn to the north is known as the Hay Tor Bound.
