After a long, gruelling walk through the tussocks, Paul Rendell celebrates by hugging the W Stone! (MP)
Notes: Steve Grigg supplies the following account when pondering at which stone (either No.85 or 86) is the Outer U Stone:
- “Dave Brewer calls the H U stone with inscribed line between (ie No 85) as the “Outer U Stone” in his Boundary Markers 2nd edition (P142)
- From the HER:
Dave Brewer: This point (the Outer U) is also the boundary of these two parishes with Dartmoor Forest, and the W stone is the Dartmoor Forest boundary marker.
Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England: 1993-1998, Dartmoor Royal Forest Project, H. Riley (Report – Survey). SDV346608.
(10/11/1994) Two boundary stones on the S bank of Red Lake at SX 64316634. The W stone is a moorland slab, 1m high, 0.7m wide and 0.15m thick. There is no inscription. Some 5m to the E is a moorland slab, 0.8m high, 1.0m wide and 0.25m thick. It is leaning slightly to the NE. The letters H U, 0.12 high, are inscribed on the SW face.
It is confusing as the two slabs are virtually N/S not E/W. That said, if we assume Brewer’s “W stone” is the same as the Royal Commission “W stone” then the uninscribed (No 86) is the forest boundary just a few metres away from the Harford / Ugborough final boundary (ie the Outer U).
In conclusion, No 85 is the “Outer U” and No 86 is the Forest Boundary.“
