Notes: The grid reference and details for this item were kindly supplied by Steve Grigg where he credits EA Wade, stating: “Brent Moor Clay Company was formed in 1872. The former Knattabarrow clay works became known as Petre’s Pits and used the old Zeal Tor Tramway, which was part of the earlier peat extraction from Red Lake. The old naphtha works at Shipley was converted to clay dries. The whole operation was abandoned in 1880.” An area of spoil heap depicted on the late 19th-century historic map, it comprises a shaft with spoil heap and is about 100m south of Knattabarrow Pool. Dartmoor HER suggest it is possibly connected with clay working.
