This is a made-up name. As magnificent as it is, standing proud above the West Okement Valley, Steng-a-Tor (or Stinka Tor!) is surrounded on three sides by bog – and even in summer it is wet. This catches people out as modern maps fail to portray this. It is quite easy to lose a leg (like I have more than once). The worst bog looks to be at SX 56631 88080 but the ‘moat’ surrounding the tor should be treated with caution by those wishing to reach it. (MP)
