This, according to John Deakins, is a bearing picket; “These were introduced around the First World War and were an early form of grid reference. Originally they were a metal spike driven into the ground with a card on it in a waterproof cover. Upon this card was a diagram and a number listing its location which then corresponded with a grid square on a map provided thus giving a location on a map.”
