  • Sandles, T. (undated): Legendary Dartmoor, Gazetteer.

Notes: “A wide stroll opens between two newtake corners ahead; the southern corner was presumably a lookout post during the Napoleonic Wars, as it is marked ‘Sentry Corner’ by Spencer” – Walking Dartmoor’s ancient tracks : a guide to 28 routes by Eric Hemery 1997 (quote courtesy of Paul Harris, of Glavind Strachan Photography, via a Facebook conversation).

Emma Cunis (Dartmoor Guide of Dartmoor’s Daughter) also commented that “My grandfather wrote that Sentry Corner likely referred to a Napoleonic lookout (in ‘High Dartmoor’ or ‘Ancient Tracks’ I can’t recall but can look it up if you want), he would have either got this from talking to locals/farmers and/or archives/maps, etc. It’s on the old South Tawton/Zeal – Hangingstone Peat Cutters Track btw (also used by tinners and rush cutters).”

”I don’t know the true derivation of ‘Sentry Corner’ but it came from a collection (Gazetteer) of Dartmoor locations put together and kindly shared with Dartefacts by Tim Sandles (Legendary Dartmoor). I have always assumed it came from Cemetery (similarly sounding to Sentry) as “The Cemetery” is very close by; https://dartefacts.co.uk/dartefact/cosdon-triple-stone-row-the-cemetery/ but I have no evidence for that assumption.. it would be interesting if anyone else knows more..” (RJN).
