The original function of this building, known as the Toll House, is unclear but it was never used to collect road tolls. It may have been an extension to a building which has since been rebuilt.

While South Brent held a regular market, tolls were collected at the cheape house with was in the middle of the road near the Anchor Hotel. It was probably sometime during the later 19th century, when the cheape house was demolished, that the toll board and bell were moved here. By 1899, the date on the toll board, markets were no longer held in South Brent and the tolls listed on the board probably applied to the fairs which were held several times a year.

Today the building is an information centre.
