This beautiful, rugged spot is really a ‘cascade’ where the River Bovey disappears below an area of dense boulders. William Crossing writes about the Steps (which in this case are both a waterfall and a crossing place) with great enthusiasm: “At one place the river [Bovey] may be passed over easily, unless it chance to be in flood. This is at Horsham Steps, where its channel is filled in such a manner with boulders as to entirely hide the stream. It can be heard as it forces its way below these masses of granite, but it is not seen until it has passed the curious impediment, and falls into Horsham Bay.
