Not your standard gate. This leads to a property today known as Manaton Gate, but which was once Rectory House. According to Heritage Gateway, there has been a house in the immediate vicinity dating back to at least the mid-17th century. During the Civil War, it was a royalist enclave during and is recorded in the history books as such. From the early 19th Century it served as the Rectory for the village until it was sold by the Church of England in 1967. Viscount Hambledon acquired the property in the early 20th Century, restoring the neglected structure and partly rebuilding it.
