This earthbound rock is known as a ‘testing stone’ which, as its name suggests, was used for testing drills. There are other examples on the moor, such as at Eylesbarrow and Tor Rocks. Many thanks go to the people of the Dartmoor Information Exchange Facebook group for providing answers.
