Just because a benchmark has not been located does not mean it doesn't exist... it may be buried or simply exist on a rock that wasn't well lit since part of finding these cut marks is having the right light available! Some NGRs extracted from Side by Side may be over 15 metres out which can make the search area quite large, and for those benchmarks on the North Moor it can become difficult to know which rocks beside the military roads have been tinkered with. This classification will always be evolving as and when new benchmark sites are visited.
