‘Big Tip’ at Foggintor is aptly named. It is a humongous heap of granite boulders and slabs, effectively the waste material from Foggintor Quarry when it was functioning. We learn from John Hallett (1994) that: “It was not until the late 1840s that workers began to be housed in the [Foggintor] quarry area and by 1861 there were 267 folk living in the area around Foggintor. The highest concentration of houses was alongside ‘Big Tip’, the largest of the spoil tips.
