Habitations, Cottages, Hamlets, Villages and Towns

On Dartefacts, we have created the following four classifications to differentiate these items from one another. They are defined below:

  • To be classified as a Village or Town, a settlement must have both a place of worship and a central meeting point, for example, Chagford.
  • A Hamlet is a small settlement that has no central place of worship and no meeting point, for example, a village hall. Lovaton is an example.
  • A Cottage is defined by name and must be occupied. Cottage, Cott and Cot are all accepted, such as Ivy Cottage.
  • Everything else, if it doesn't fit into the above, is a Habitation; one or two dwellings. A collection of these would become a Hamlet. Heathercombe is a Habitation.
