Formerly shown on OS Maps as a ‘hut circle’, Hemery (1983) writes: “Below Vur Tor Wood a feeder reaches the right bank from Rush Bottom. In the crutch of the confluence is the ruin of a small circular shelter shown by OS on the 1809 edition of their six-inch map as ‘Hut Circle’, subsequent editions of both six-inch and 1:25,000 maps repeating the designation, which in such a situation of fen and isolation may be disregarded. Crossing, with whom I agree, describes it as “a small structure which has much the appearance of a herdsman’s hut”. As the grazing on Pinswell and Vur Tor Plain formed the Preda de Vurtorre mentioned in a Dartmoor Forester’s Account of over six hundred years ago, this building could have been the Forester’s House.”
